Guest lecture on Climate Diplomacy

Symbiosis School of International Studies (SSIS) had the privilege of inviting Mr. Rajendra Shende, former director of the United Nations Environment Programme and the current Chairman of the TERRE (Technology, Education, Research and Rehabilitation for the Environment) Policy Center. for a lecture on 'Climate Diplomacy' on 3rd October, 2016.

The lecture was of great relevance , given that India ratified the Paris climate change agreement at the United Nations, on 2nd Oct 2016. Mr. Shende shared his insights on the recent developments and further elaborated on the major agreements at play in context to climate concerns such as the Montreal Protocol, the Paris Climate Agreement and the Kyoto Protocol. He explained to the students how and why diplomacy succeeded in preventing the further depletion of the ozone layer which was a major crisis not quite long ago.He described the various principles of negotiation with regards to climate diplomacy. He also highlighted the numerous job opportunities in the climate diplomacy sector for the youth. He concluded his lecture by saying 'delay in planning is better to stop delay in execution'.
